Online Portuguese classes: Brazilian or European first, then the price

Written Oct 26, 2026

Choose Brazilian or European Portuguese before you choose a teacher: the two are one language on paper, but they sound different enough that a beginner taught one will struggle to follow the other at first. After that, compare prices, and for Portuguese the teacher's country moves them noticeably. On 18 October 2026 Preply's Portuguese page priced its ten featured teachers between $27 and $50 for a 50-minute lesson, and italki's Portuguese page said prices "range from $5 to $30 per hour" on average. Group classes are the gap: none of the platforms this site covers runs scheduled group classes in Portuguese, so you are buying one-to-one lessons.

Brazilian or European Portuguese

Brazil has by far the larger number of speakers, and most online teachers, courses and media are Brazilian. European Portuguese is the variety of Portugal. Grammar is largely shared. What differs most for a learner is sound: European Portuguese reduces and drops unstressed vowels, so it can sound clipped to ears trained on Brazilian speech. Everyday words and forms of "you" also differ.

  • Moving to, working with, or married into Brazil: Brazilian.
  • Moving to Portugal or applying for anything there: European.
  • No fixed destination: Brazilian, for the larger pool of teachers and listening material.
  • Heritage learners: whichever your family speaks, and tell the teacher in the first message.

Once you have chosen, filter for it. Teachers on both marketplaces say in their profiles which variety they teach, and some teach both; a teacher whose own accent matches your target is the simplest choice for a beginner.

What Preply published about Portuguese prices

Preply's Portuguese tutor page, read on 18 October 2026 and served in US dollars, made four price statements. Its structured data said $27/hr to $50/hr (avg: $36/hr). Its price filter ran $3 – $40+ per lesson. Its prose said "Prices start from $3 per class, with an average of $17". Its ten featured teachers were priced at $40, $35, $50, $30, $32, $38, $36, $40, $27 and $29, each for a 50-minute lesson: lowest $27, highest $50, mean $35.70. The structured-data range is, again, exactly the lowest, highest and rounded mean of those ten cards, the pattern this site recorded on seven Preply pages in September.

The nationality table is the most useful part for Portuguese, because it lines up with the variety question: Brazil at $23/hr, Portugal at $30/hr, Angola at $22/hr and the United States at $39/hr. Native Portuguese speakers averaged $25/hr and non-native speakers $28/hr. The page claimed 2,624 Portuguese tutors. As with every figure here, a reload shows different teachers, so treat these as the shape of the market rather than a quote.

What italki published about Portuguese prices

italki's Portuguese teacher page answered the cost question on 18 October 2026: "On average, prices for Portuguese lessons range from $5 to $30 per hour." It added that tutors set their own rates, that some offer discounted trial lessons, and that package deals for several lessons may save money. That is a narrower range than italki printed for Arabic ($5 to $50) or Chinese ($10 to $40) on the same day. As always, italki talks per hour and Preply per lesson, so compare like with like.

Tutor marketplaces: choosing a Portuguese teacher

On Preply and italki, filter for Portuguese, then read profile headlines for the variety and for the kind of learner the teacher works with. Both are partner links: if you buy lessons through them the platform may pay us, which does not change the figures quoted here. Book trial lessons with two teachers of your chosen variety and compare how much they correct you, how much they talk, and whether they propose a plan. Our Preply vs italki comparison covers how the two platforms differ on booking, packages and teacher choice.

Group and structured courses: the missing route

Lingoda, the group-class provider this site covers, named six learning languages on 18 October 2026: English, Business English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Portuguese was not among them. Schools that specialise in Portuguese do sell online group courses, usually by level and on a fixed timetable, and some state their class sizes and prices on their own pages. We have not priced them here; read each course page for the variety taught, the level, the class size and the total cost.

A group course suits learners who want a timetable and classmates. A tutor suits learners who need flexibility, a particular variety, or a level that doesn't fit a standard group.

Conversational Portuguese classes

Many learners ask for "conversational" classes. That works well once you can form simple sentences, and it is the fastest way to tune your ear to the variety you chose. Before that point, conversation tends to become the teacher speaking and you listening. Ask a conversation teacher to correct you, not just to talk with you, and to send a short list of your mistakes after each lesson.

How long Portuguese takes, by the only official measure

The US Foreign Service Institute puts Portuguese at 24 weeks, the short end of its Category I band of 24-30 weeks (552-690 class hours). Its trainees spend most of each working day in class with homework on top, and the FSI itself says the real time differs from one learner to the next. That makes Portuguese one of the faster languages for English speakers, but the figure describes full-time diplomats, not evening lessons, and we do not convert it into a forecast.

The free start, which pays us nothing

Portuguese pronunciation, especially the nasal vowels, is worth hearing many times before you pay anyone. Free podcasts, music and series in your chosen variety do that well. Language exchange with Portuguese speakers who want to practise English is free and gives real conversation, if little correction. Spend your money on the part you cannot do alone: speaking with someone who will correct you.

Making Portuguese lessons affordable

  • Two short lessons a week usually beat one long one.
  • Use the lower end of the price range for conversation practice, and a more experienced teacher for grammar and correction.
  • Do vocabulary and listening free between lessons.
  • Compare by the minute: Preply's teacher cards were priced for 50-minute lessons; italki quoted per hour.

How this site works out the cost of live classes, with the free routes included, is set out in how this site prices live Spanish classes. If Spanish is your second choice, Spanish conversation classes online covers the nearest neighbour.

Questions about online Portuguese classes

How much do online Portuguese classes cost?

On 18 October 2026 Preply's Portuguese page priced its ten featured teachers between $27 and $50 for a 50-minute lesson, with a price filter of $3 – $40+ and a prose average of $17. italki's Portuguese page said prices average $5 to $30 per hour. Teachers set their own rates, so these figures change daily.

Should I learn Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Choose the variety you will use. Brazilian has many more speakers, teachers and learning materials online; European is the one you need for life in Portugal. The grammar is largely shared, and the difference a beginner notices most is pronunciation.

Are there group Portuguese classes online?

Not on the platforms this site prices: Lingoda's group classes covered six languages on 18 October 2026, and Portuguese was not one. Specialist Portuguese schools sell online group courses; their prices and class sizes are on their own pages.

Is Portuguese easy to learn for English speakers?

It is in the US Foreign Service Institute's Category I, the languages closest to English, listed at 24 weeks of full-time study for its students. That is among the shortest figures the FSI publishes, though the FSI says the real time varies by learner.

Can I learn Brazilian Portuguese online with a native teacher?

Yes. Both Preply and italki list Portuguese teachers who state in their profiles which variety they teach. Filter for Brazilian Portuguese, then book trial lessons with two teachers before buying a package.
